Wood Pull Toys & Bath Toys
"Different Drummer Workshop"
In 1973 our family fled the “big city industrial rat race” to live in the small town of Solon, Maine, where we started the Different Drummer Workshop. We have always remained a small family wood craft business, aimed at making traditional wooden toys for kids using native Maine resources.
Our wooden toys are best known for the quality of their craftsmanship. The primary material is white pine, and every board of wood is carefully selected to show off its natural beauty and grain. The completed wooden toy is finely sanded to a satin smooth natural finish
In designing and building our toys, safety, simplicity, and durability are the main considerations. In manufacturing we make sure that all joints are solidly glued, that corners and edges are well rounded, and all surfaces are sanded smooth and feel soft and pleasant to touch. No artificial finishes are applied to our wooden toys, except to the sailboat and the “executive desk toys” and games, thus reducing concern about toxic substances going into a child’s mouth.
We believe that toys intended for children should be non-violent and simple in design, leaving the child to use his or her own imagination (instead of a battery) to fill in whatever details are needed at the time of play.

Wood Pull-Toys

The Holey Roller, People Pull Toy, and Waddle Duck are all simple handcrafted wooden pull toys that any toddler would love to lead around the house.
   The Holey Roller is designed to be up-right no matter how it sits on the floor, reducing the chance for the child to become frustrated. As it is pulled all 8 of the wooden balls rotate and create an interesting effect.
   The People Pull Toy comes with 6 passengers and a driver which are all removable and provide the opportunity for the child to help develop his or her dexterity and hand/eye coordination.
   The Waddle Duck pull toy is lots of fun to watch as it actually waddles along the floor when the child pulls it. All of the wooden pull toys are hand sanded to a satin smooth natural finish, and are handmade to withstand lots of hard play.

Fire-Truck

Our handcrafted Wooden Toy Car Transporter, Fire Engine, and Cargo Carrier are all excellent toys to fire up the imagination of any 2-6 year old kid. Each truck body connects to its cab with a sturdy wooden peg and each cab has a removable driver. The length of each is about 15” and the maple do-nut wheels are 2” dia.
   As with all of our handmade wooden toys, these 3 wood vehicles are finely hand sanded to a satin smooth natural finish, and are ruggedly built to handle lots of hard play by that special child or grand child.
   The wooden toy Car Transporter also features 2 micro cars which are each 4” long.
The toy Fire Engine Truck has 4 additional removable firemen and a ladder that moves up and down and rotates.
   The wood toy Cargo Carrier contains a full load of removable pine cargo, and is sure to be used to haul other treasures as well.

Red Baron Wood Airplane

Our handcrafted wooden toy Red Baron Bi-plane is a favorite toy of kids and adults alike. I often “fly” a toy airplane around the workshop myself (when no-one else is watching).
   The wingspan and the body both measure 12” long, and it comes with a removable red scarfed pilot and a propeller that spins. The wood toy Red Baron bi-plane is hand sanded to a satin smooth natural finish.
   It will delight any child or grand child with many hours of fun, and will then be displayed on the top shelf, to be taken down now and then for an occasional “flight” in the years ahead.
   The Red Baron is also available as a KIT. It makes an excellent project on which a child and an adult may work together. It comes with everything that is needed, including glue. All parts are sanded smooth and rounded, all holes are drilled, and the instructions are easy and fun to follow. Many of these kits have been turned into lamps and other hanging decorations for a kid’s bedroom.

Doll Stroller or High Chair, Made in the USA
Designed for dolls up to 18”. We save our nicest lumber for these wooden toys, which, because of their size best shows off the natural beauty of Maine white pine.    The satin smooth natural finish which we achieve by lots of hand sanding, makes these wood toys feel delightful to touch, and the simplicity of their Shaker influenced design renders them pleasing to look at as well.
   Not only will today’s kids have fun with these handmade toys, but they will surely be passed down to be enjoyed by the kids and grand kids of the next generation.

This is an adorable unfinished-wood stroller also made in the USA by a family business. You can special-order it direct from the business below (approx $62 including shipping). Allow 3 weeks for delivery. The unfinished stroller as pictured above looks much nicer in our opinion (we have seen both unfinished and finished options in person), so we highly recommend ordering it "unfinished" as a special order:

Note: if you have tile-floors, wood strollers are pretty loud! (better for use on on carpet) Our 2 year old is frustrated because she wants to get inside the stroller herself, but it's too small for that! Note the tray is not removable, and the total height of the stroller including the handle is 25", and the inside-width of the seat is 7".
