Savvy Rest (North Star) Organic Mattresses
We used to offer other organic mattresses but after experience with
various companies we now offer only North Star Beds (now they moved to
another state and have a new name: Savvy Rest) because we believe they
have the best organic beds on the market. Here are some more reasons
we chose to offer these wonderful beds, and in my dealings with the company
we have found these company missions statements to be very true.
Michael Penny: "While I was growing up, I never had any interest in business. My Dad was a carpenter; my Mom stayed at home until I was in high school. Owning a business was not something I thought I would ever do. I got a B.A. in psychology because I wanted to learn about myself, discover who I was inside and help others to do the same. I considered graduate work in psychology, but instead I joined a yoga community. I am a teacher at heart, not a salesperson. In 2004 I had inquired about all the natural latex mattresses on the market, and for different reasons I didn’t feel comfortable doing business with any of them. Either the mattresses had some synthetics in them, or the companies were too far away, or they were too hard to communicate with. I was searching for a real natural latex mattress and a company I could communicate with, and I thought an Amish made mattress might be a good fit for my retail store. So I went to check it out."

However, I found that the work was not entirely fulfilling; and I began to explore other possibilities for myself. Pressure Relief for Deeper Sleep
The North Star natural latex mattress relieves pressure normally caused
from sleeping on a mattress that is too firm. This improves circulation
at night and reduces tossing and turning. Each time you turn, you
move from a deeper stage of sleep into a lighter sleep. The North Star
mattress allows you to remain longer in deep Stage 3 and Stage 4 sleep.
You won’t wake up stiff or sore on a North Star mattress.
Spine Stays in Alignment
Our natural, latex mattress is supportive enough that your spine will
remain in alignment as you sleep, so you won’t wake up with a backache.

Most mattresses use toxic chemicals, and you breathe chemicals during the
night. The North Star is an organic mattress and is chemical free, so you
won’t wake up with a “chemically caused” headache.
What’s in our mattress?
Latex
at the Core
Latex is anti-microbial and anti-bacterial, and dust mites cannot live
in it. It will hold up for 10—20 years. After all, it’s rubber. Therefore,
the best organic mattress needs to start with natural latex rubber as the
core. Cotton fiber is a poor mattress ingredient as cotton collects
moisture, compresses, and attracts dust mites.
The Casing?
You can think of the casing as a 6-sided fabric box that you put your
latex into. Amish craftsmen and craftswomen hand sew every one of our casings.
The casing is made using certified organic wool fiber quilted to certified
organic cotton fabric. The bottom of the casing (or fabric box) is
organic cotton fabric.The four sides of the casing are made of quilting.
The quilting is made by a quilter who sews certified organic wool fiber
between two layers of organic cotton fabric. We use bias tape around the
edges so it has a finished look, and we zipper (zipper pictured above around
the top outer edge of the mattress) the quilted top to the bottom 5 sides
of the casing. The top of the “box” zips off. Once you insert your
chosen layers of latex and zip the cover back on, you have a mattress that
is comfortable, beautiful, durable, organic, and hygienic.
Organic Wool & Cotton
We use a thin layer of organic wool fiber quilted to organic cotton
fabric. Wool is a natural insulator in the winter and wicks moisture
in the summer; but if you use too much, it takes a body impression. We
use 3/4”—thick enough to do its job, but thin enough not to take a body
impression. Cotton clothing feels great next to you skin, and
cotton fabric is good on top of a mattress. However, cotton fiber is a
poor ingredient in a mattress because it attracts moisture, compresses,
and dust mites love it. Conventionally grown cotton is what is used in
inexpensive futons, and even organic cotton fiber will not perform well
in a mattress. That’s why we use organic wool fiber quilted to organic
cotton fabric.
Why 100% Natural?
Consider that most mattresses and pillows contain a variety of toxic
chemicals that you would never consider sleeping with—PBDEs, fire retardants,
and formaldehyde. Just because you can’t smell them doesn’t mean you aren’t
breathing them all night. Would you take a can of turpentine or a
jug of anti-freeze to bed with you? How is sleeping on a chemical bed any
different?
You never thought about it before?
We understand. We never thought about it before either.
Fifty years ago nobody considered that cigarettes were carcinogenic and
contributed to heart disease. What to do with this information is up to
you. At least now you can choose a mattress that is comfortable and
safe (natural and not offgassing).

(use voucher code FREESHIP, allow 2-3 weeks for delivery) 3-layer dunlop latex mattresses 3rd layer of natural dunlop latex added Most customers seem very happy with a soft/med/firm layering (the mattress arrives with a zip-cover and 3 layers, so you can put whatever layer you want on top, rotating the layers to find the softness that feels best). If you wake up feeling sore or if you sleep on your side, you likely need a soft layer on top to relieve pressure points. Light-weight people also usually need a softer mattress (due to not having enough weight to allow the mattress to mold to the body shape and relieve pressure points). My sister and I both like the soft-soft-medium layering best for ourselves (we are in the 100-150 lb range and suffered from back-aches in the past when we used innerspring mattresses). Our husbands weigh more and prefer a firmer mattress for their side of the bed, for example soft-med-firm (at 180 lbs) or med-med-firm layering (at 220 lbs). The queen and king size mattresses can be ordered with split-layering (different layering on one side compared to the other). If you'd like that option, please just let us know after ordering (it's no extra charge). The split layering offers the greatest flexibility for changing the firmness once the mattress is at your house (you can rotate the layers around until you find the softness that works best on each side of the bed). Foundations for Latex Mattresses
A foundation is a flat, rigid surface. A latex mattress functions best
on a rigid surface, such as a foundation or a platform bed. They
may look the same on the outside, but foundations are rigid, and box springs
are flexible. A new or nearly new box spring will serve the purpose, but
if it is poor quality or more than five years old, we don’t recommend using
one. Box springs can cause your mattress to sag. Savvy Rest foundations
are made with untreated pine and covered with organic wool quilted to organic
cotton fabric. They are available in standard 9 ” height or low-profile
5 ” height. We can customize any length, width, or height.
